Medical Billing in New Mexico for Medicare
If there’s one thing that should likewise be taught in medical schools, it’s proper medical coding and billing for Medicare. If you are a physician who has just started practicing in New Mexico, it won’t come as a surprise if you’re struggling with this issue. Truth be told, even those who have been in practice for decades still find it near impossible to properly code and bill a patient visit.
That said, there are certain things you can do and/or should keep in mind to make medical coding and billing easier. Some of these are the following:
1. Take note of your patients’ height and weight, as well as blood pressure. When billing, there is a portion that asks for a review of systems, which involves the patient’s muscular, skeletal, constitutional, and cardiovascular systems. By having the said data documented, you will be able to comply with this requirement without exerting too much time and effort. All you need to do is look at the information you have and determine if there possible problems that need to be looked into further.
2. Know the difference between a referral and a consultation. One of the most common mistakes physicians make is they use the word “referral” when the patient visit can be more accurately defined as a consultation – which can be billed at a higher rate than a true referral. How are these different? In a referral, a transfer of care between two physicians ensues. And if you are the doctor referred to, you should code this as a new patient visit. If, however, the patient was instructed by his doctor to see you for advice or a more in-depth analysis of a condition (with no transfer of care involved), bill the visit as a consultation.
3. Have your patients sign an ABN. If you are not aware of what this is, it stands for “advance beneficiary notice”. If you are unsure whether or not Medicare will cover the claim of a patient, it would be wise to have him sign this document so that in the event that it is denied, you can collect payment from him. However, if the patient is unwilling, you can place the code “–GZ” to indicate that you are aware of the possibility of non-coverage. This will make it possible for you to still be paid for your services.
Improper medical coding and billing for Medicare can result to you being placed under investigation, or worse, sued by the government and/or by your affected patients. As such, although challenging, you should take the time to know how to code and bill your patient visits. Doing so will not only help you avoid the situations mentioned above; it will also mean less headache and frustration when it comes to the matter of reimbursement for the services you rendered.
